To the Editor:“College Football Is Not Essential” (editorial, Aug. 30), in calling for the cancellation of the coming season, does not go far enough. Indeed, you are correct that there is no way to protect these young men from infection by Covid-19, given the nature of the sport. Yet competitive football by its nature is injurious to athletes’ well-being, often causing lifelong problems in mobility and, in too many cases, brain disease caused by the big hits that fans prize. Football cannot be played safely. Time to drop this sport from high school and college sports programs.
